Dr Ed on Balistic Gel Testing: Ed recently writes:
I found this video of penetration testing with a 40# longbow bow most interesting, especially in regards to their comments about ballistic gel. Their experience is the same as I found: penetration in ballistic gel does not equal penetration in tissue. Much like foam targets, ballistic gel has a major shaft drag factor not present in real tissues. Indeed, I found that I could not even get any relative correlation for any given broadhead/arrow setup I tried. Blood suffused tissues actually lubricate the broadhead/shaft during penetration and the still living soft tissues tend to retract when cut. Both facilitate arrow penetration in living tissues. In my experience and testing I never found any artificial test medium that correlates to the penetration outcomes seen on living, or freshly killed, real tissues. – Ed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i94gbMF_X3U
